This book is far from to be recommendable to new students even if they have already a good practice in Devanagari.It is a really good dictionary and I also agree that is much more light than the Monier Williams one, being very completed it remains a challenge for the student not aware of Devanagari.
The dictionary is full organized in agreement with the Sanskrit alphabet organization but the romanized does is not coincident with the common one already full established in the nineteen century. Seems that Macdonell did decide to develop something many times not coincident with the Sanskrit intonation way; for instance, to the च he write ka instead of ca and in ज (ja) he attributes ka that is a repetition of क, the truly ka sound. This modifications occurs a lot and even too much for the beginner that can loose the continuity identification, for instance, because lacks ङ division where could be kept the explanation of it plus ङ object of sense; desire; etc and ङृ a navate, nunuve, etc, at least for to remark the continuity in the search.
One aspect that is important is that may keep a more advanced student aware in the printing/publishing difficulties where alteration of letters was produced for to satisfy the Devanagari; also, the revival of the old Devanagari letters.
But for more advanced students and never beginners.
Anyway and in honor of so great author I am giving 4 stars to this work.

Apte and Monier-Williams are the most frequently used Sanskrit-English Dictionary, but Macdonnell has a number of advantages. Apte is a bit scruffy, MW is too big. Macdonnell's vocabulary is very comprehensive - it is rare that one has to go to Monier-Williams for a word not in Macdonnell, and unlike MW, it is strictly alphabetical, which make it very much easier to use. It is a handsome and easy-to-read production, unlike Apte. One tip for users - a whole page was omitted from the original 1923 edition as exists as an Addendum at the front of the book - if you can't find a word beginning with prac-, that is where it will be!
A little bit hard to follow unless you learn the Sanskrit alphabet. So far it makes no sense to me, I would have preferred an English alphabet method of alphabetizing so that I can actually find the words I need instead of looking in a million places.

This is a great dictionary. The only thing to be aware of is that it's arranged alphabetically according to romanized Sanskrit alphabet which takes some getting used to if you're still learning that. I also wish there was an English-Sanskrit dictionary but I haven't seen that, probably because it's not exactly a spoken language.
One of the pages was covered in dirt and dried blood in the top right corner, not exactly what I would call "brand new."
Otherwise the dictionary is useable, though it's not a great reprint so the quality of the text varies highly from page to page.
